    Katherine Women’s Information & Legal Service (KWILS) is a not-for-profit Community Legal Centre based in Katherine, Northern Territory. We are a specialist women’s legal service providing all women, and those who identify as women, in Katherine and the Big Rivers Region access to free and professional legal and support services, with a particular focus on the reduction of domestic, family and sexual violence. We also provide community legal education and undertake advocacy and law reform work in areas that improve gender equity and address gendered violence.

    KWILS aims to ensure that all women in the Katherine region have access to free legal advice and representation in the following areas:

    Welcome to Lifeline Central Australia. Lifeline Central Australia Incorporated opened in Alice Springs on the 1st July 2003. Our primary focus is on community education and training, particularly in the area of suicide awareness and prevention.

    Community Education

    Provides community education and outreach about suicide prevention, awareness and assistance for all communities across the Northern Territory, including remote and isolated communities.

    Lifeline Telephone Crisis Support

    A twenty-four-hour telephone crisis support, information and referral service available nationally that provides an immediate and confidential opportunity to discuss a problem or concern.

    The service responds to callers of all ages with a wide range of concerns and emergencies including matters involving relationships, domestic violence, family issues, youth issues, child abuse, anxiety, depression, postnatal depression, loneliness, unemployment, grief, problems at work or school, homelessness, money worries, drug & alcohol problems and suicide. A particular focus is suicide prevention and mental health.

    Training Services

    Workshops such as Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), safeTALK and The Accidental Counsellor. The courses run over two days or for half a day and are relevant for community members, mental health workers, housing workers, medical practitioners, teachers & school support staff, counsellors, youth workers, domestic violence support workers, drug & alcohol workers, police & corrections staff and clergy.

    FINANCIAL COUNSELLING, CAPABILITY & RESILIENCE HUB

    The Hub assists people in financial difficulty to address their financial problems.  Financial Counsellors and Financial Capability Workers assist clients one on one and in workshops helping them to know how to manage their money, develop saving plans and budgeting. This service covers Central Australia region and includes 33 remote communities and Alice Springs.

    • Financial Counsellors

    Counsellors support clients with personal financial difficulties, undertake in depth assessments of a client’s financial situation and work with them to increase their capability to make informed decisions in resolving personal financial difficulties.  Advice includes debt management, negotiating with creditors, budgeting, bankruptcy, credit laws and eligibility for government assistance.  Make an appointment for a free professional and confidential chat.

    • Financial Capability Workers

    Financial Capability Workers provide one on one and group sessions to assist clients with basic financial literacy, education and support as well as delivering community education sessions.

    EMERGENCY RELIEF

    Emergency relief is for people who are in a crisis situation and dependant on need can include food, food vouchers, blankets, clothing and where needed referrals to other support. This service is available every morning of the week Monday to Friday 9am to 12 noon.

     KWATJA ETATHA PLAYGROUP

    Kwatja Etatha (Arrente for Living Waters) Playgroup runs intensively supported ‘play sessions’ where families are encouraged to interact with their children through structured play activities.  Playgroup sessions run during school terms on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9:30am to 11.30 am.  Transport to and from Playgroup is provided.

    FAMILIES LEARNING TOGETHER

    Supported by Anglicare ‘Families Learning Together’ offers interactive workshops for parents including Circle of Security and learning experiences for families and parents on Babies and Toddlers Development, Caring for Young Children and Babies, Hygiene and Safety

    INTENSIVE FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICE (IFSS)

    This programme at Ntaria (Hermannsburg) aims to reduce child neglect through building on family strengths and supporting families to build their capacity to meet the needs of their children.  Families requiring support are referred from other agencies.

    Mental Illness fellowship of Australia (NT) (MIFANT) is a not for profit charitable organisation that has been operating in the NT for over 30 years. With services in Darwin, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs. MIFANT provides recovery based support to people with a mental illness, their families and carers and also early intervention to children and young people at risk of developing a mental illness.

    MIFANT also provides a range of NDIS services for people with a mental illness including Recovery Coach, Support Coordination, Social and Community Participation and Community Access. As a not for profit organisation, all NDIS funds go back to providing quality supports.

    MIFANT is the NT members for National organisations Mental Illness Fellowship of Australia and Mental Health Carers Australia. Both organisations provide a national advocacy platform for the NT to be represented on issues affecting the whole of the mental health sector.

    Mission Australia – Sobering-Up Shelter

    The Darwin Sobering Up Shelter provides overnight accommodation to homeless and displaced people (18 and over) who are under the influence of alcohol and other drugs and are at risk of harm. NT Police and Larrakia Night Patrol bring people to the Sobering Up Shelter from the greater Darwin and Palmerston areas. Shelter staff then assist clients with referrals to services that can help them to improve their health and wellbeing. Engagement is sensitive and culturally respectful to ensure clients feel safe at all times.

    An AOD outreach team is available for indigenous people with alcohol & other drug problems.

    Allied Health Services

    Allied health professionals routinely visit the community toprovide ancillary medical services for community residents as well as support and advice for resident staff.Visiting allied health services include audiology, dentistry,dietetics, occupational therapy, optometry and podiatry.

    Chronic Disease Outreach Team

    A program focusing on the prevention of chronic diseases is provided.

    Community Health Education

    Provides public health awareness education including programs such as Tobacco Action, Social & Emotional Wellbeing, Strong Fathers, Strong Families, and Healthy Active Lifestyle.

    District Medical Officer

    A district medical officer is available twenty-four hours via telephone or radio for consultation as required.

    Health Promotion

    Health promotion programs are conducted to improve the health and wellbeing of the community.

    Health Screening for Primary-School Children

    An annual health-screening service is provided to monitor the health and well being of primary-school children.

    Infant & Child Health Screening

    Screening and monitoring of health for infants and children under five years old is provided as well as advice about health issues for parents with children in this age group.

    Men’s Health Outreach Team

    The Men’s Health Outreach Team focuses on health issues in indigenous men.

    Mental Health Services

    Mental health services are available to assist with problems of emotional and social wellbeing for indigenous people.

    Specialist Medical Services

    Specialist medical practitioners routinely visit the community to provide medical services for community residents as well as support and advice for resident staff. Visiting specialist services include cardiology, obstetrics & gynaecology and paediatrics. A visiting specialist physician and renal physician are also available.

    Strong Woman

    The Strong Woman is an Indigenous woman or elder in the community who provides cultural education & information about women’s issues for Indigenous females and provides support for Indigenous women and their children to maximise their health & wellbeing. The Strong Woman may speak to women at the Health Service, visit primary schools & secondary schools or visit other places in the community.
