Mental Health & Suicide Prevention

The NT Community Visitor Program is an independent service located in the Anti-Discrimination Commission.

Its aim to ensure the rights of those being treated for mental illness or disability are upheld and their views and concerns are heard.

Community visitors are people employed by the CVP who regularly visit Mental Health Inpatient facilities and Disability Secure Care facilities to ensure an appropriate standard of care.

The Community Visitor Program (CVP) provides monitoring, complaint resolution and advocacy services for people detained and receiving care under the Mental Health and Related Services Act 1998 and Disability Services Act 1993. The CVP also makes and monitors recommendations on systemic issues such as interpreter use and seclusion reduction.

Our Social & Emotional Wellbeing Service provides Aboriginal people and their families including children and adolescents with holistic and culturally appropriate primary health care for social and cultural wellbeing, mental health and community connectedness including:

• confidential counselling and psychological services including psycho-education;
• social and cultural support including case management, Women’s and Men’s bush trips, art therapy, access to local language speakers and connection to country;
• drug and alcohol treatment for Aboriginal people experiencing the effects of harmful alcohol and alcohol use; and
• a dedicated GP service.

Danila Dilba Health Service is an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation providing culturally-appropriate, comprehensive primary health care and community services to Biluru (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) people in the Yilli Rreung (greater Darwin) region of the Northern Territory.

As an Aboriginal Medical Service, services are provided for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and singles.

Danila Dilba offers a wide range of medical and support services including:

• Specialist health and clinical services including audiology, paediatrics, ear, nose and throat, podiatry, physiotherapy, colonoscopy, and treatment for diabetes and asthma. Specialist medical physicians are also available.
• Youth services including activities, counselling and support for children and young people. Counselling may deal with stress, trauma, anxiety, depression, postnatal depression, loss and grief, relationship difficulties, sexuality and domestic violence.
• School based health checks for students.
• Dental checks and flouride treatments for children.
• Don Dale Youth Support provides health care and support to children in detention, providing therapeutic group work and one-on-one support .
• Deadly Choices is an early intervention and prevention program that compliments Danila Dilba Health Service’s clinical programs. Deadly Choices aims to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to make healthy choices for themselves and their families.
• Alcohol and Other Drugs provides support to clients and their families who are impacted by alcohol or drugs.  The team provides a service to Indigenous people that is accessible, confidential and meets the clients’ cultural needs.
• Tackling Indigenous Smoking helps Indigenous people develop quit smoking skills through tailored and culturally safe services including one-on-one consultations around motivation, education, goal setting and clinical advice.
• Well Women’s Clinic with referrals as necessary, offering family planning and fertility advice, pregnancy testing and advice, pap smears, breast examination and rubella immunisations. The clinic also focuses on the early detection and treatment of chronic diseases.
• Women’s groups including screening and monitoring of health for infants and children under five years old, in addition to advice about health concerns for parents with children in this age group.
• Australian Nurse-Family Partnership Program provides parenting support through a sustained home visiting program that supports women pregnant with an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait child and her family to improve their own health and the health of their baby.
• The Men’s Clinic specializes in men\\\’s health issues and focuses on the early detection and treatment of chronic diseases.
• The Mobile Unit offers health services for those most at risk of preventable diseases: frail, aged, those who have disabilities and are unable to attend the health service and for those who do not have transport.
• Social and emotional wellbeing counselling and support offered for those affected as a result of the Stolen Generations.
• Social and emotional wellbeing support for members of the Indigenous community who have mental health issues or emotional difficulties.
• General counselling available for families and individuals dealing with stress, trauma, anxiety, depression, postnatal depression, loss and grief, relationship difficulties, sexuality and domestic violence.
• Sexual health services including testing, counselling and medical treatment for HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmissible infections.
• The Syphilis Enhanced Response Team provides an enhanced time-to-treat service in response to the syphilis outbreak.
• Care Co-Ordination provides care and intensive support for clients with complex needs.
• Legal Health Mob is a health-justice partnership with NT Legal Aid, providing a lawyer and support worker to attend Danila Dilba clinics and assist with a wide range of family, financial and health matters.

Providing a safe, friendly and healing environment where men are able to work on meaningful projects at their own pace in their own time in the company of and support from other men.

Counselling, organisational development, human-resource consultancy services and critical-incident stress-management services are available for individuals and organisations across the Northern Territory.

Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM)

Provides professional, customised support and learning programs to minimise risks to employees’ personal health and wellbeing associated with exposure to traumatic events. Training includes stress management, effective communication, basic counselling skills and dealing with aggressive & violent people. A comprehensive peer support training program is also available.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

Provides a comprehensive range of confidential counselling and support services in work-related problems for employees and their immediate family members, paid for by employers.

After-hours appointments are also available.

Male and female counsellors are available.

Training & Development

Training and consultancy services available in organisational development and human resources include strategic & business planning, performance management, succession planning, organisational reviews, focus groups & culture surveys, team development, leadership, development programs, human resource consulting, performance review & evaluation, policy review & development, recruitment and retention, recruitment testing, job design, outplacement services, career planning, performance management, diversity & cultural change and organisational change.

Alcohol & Other Drug (AOD) Program

A specialist counselling and therapeutic treatment service for people affected by alcohol and other drugs.

The program helps to support, encourage and reinforceactions taken by individuals to reduce alcohol and othersubstance related harm. The program is flexible and tailored to meet the needs of the individual, children, couples, families, groups, communities or organisations.

Education and counselling for employees and members oftheir immediate families are also available.

EASA psychologists and counsellors offering the program are professionally accredited, trained and experienced. Male and female counsellors are available.

Funded by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, this program aims to promote social inclusion, cohesion, multicultural diversity and linguistic diversity for the wellbeing of migrants. The program offers Mental Health support to migrants in the NT by applying cultural safety model while dealing with psycho-social issues of migrants, building therapeutic alliance and trust, making services inclusive and accessible. To engage the multicultural population, good quality interpreter services where available that will help in developing participatory and collaborative partnerships with the migrant population. The service is provided through Telehealth model or face to face consultation which will leverage the existing Ignite potential resources of trained Mental health professionals.

Community Wellness Services provides wellness support in the areas of Social Emotional Wellbeing, Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD), Youth Diversion and Family Support.

Our team consist of Family & Community Wellness workers, a Youth Diversion Case Management worker, a Youth & Family Therapeutic worker, a Senior Counsellor and a Manager. We are currently growing our team of Family & Community Wellness Workers, representative of the diverse range of local language/family groups in the community.

At Community Wellness Services, we are committed to providing our services in ways that integrate mainstream and Indigenous mental health and wellbeing practices.

Fare Thee Well is a bespoke death and dying counselling and support service for people who may need extra support or who wish to die at home.

A qualified Counsellor, Death Doula and Funeral Celebrant can guide you and your loved ones through the difficult time when you or your loved one are facing death.

GROW Support Group provides self-help and support groups for adults with mental health or emotional problems. Groups follow a structured program and provide support for participants in a positive and non-threatening setting. GROW groups are voluntary, anonymous, confidential and non-denominational.
