Akeyulerre Healing Centre – Ingkenteme | Bush Schools

Ingkenteme, means following the footsteps back. Our elders want to be teaching their grandchildren on their country, the way they learnt.

Akeyulerre family groups are supported by the Ingkenteme program to lead camps on their homelands, creating time for young people to be on country with their elders and family members. On the camps they learn stories of the land, language, and kinship structures; this builds a strong identity as an Arrernte person.

When back in town, families will share the stories and learning from their country trips with photos, films and by getting together for ‘family nights’.

Akeyulerre Healing Centre – Strong Families

Family life is central for Arrernte people, when the elders started Akeyulerre they wanted to make a place that families feel comfortable to sit down together, heal and show respect for each other. At Akeyulerre we support the cultural systems and connections that hold families together and keep them strong, we understand the importance and challenges of living in large family networks.

Our ‘family nights’ happen monthly, bringing together and celebrating Arrernte families, we share stories, teach our kids and enjoy time together. We run annual Healing Camps on country to deepen our connections and to keep teaching our young people about country, language and healing.

The heart of our families is with our elders. At Akeyulerre our elders are employed to guide our work, teach the younger generations and provide important healing services within our community. We support our elders to sustain their roles as knowledge holders and carers, in their families and communities, as well as offer practical help for everyday life.

    Family Support Services
The Family Support Service program invites Arrernte families to share their stories about what is important for them to be strong and safe. Akeyulerre will work with our families and elders to apply their understanding of being resilient and connected, to inform a model of care that will help Anglicare work well with Arrernte families.

    Community Development Program (CDP)

The Community Development Program (CDP) supports job seekers in remote Australian communities to become \’job-ready\’, address employment barriers, and contribute to their communities through a range of high-quality activities.

ALPA operates a community-controlled model for the delivery of CDP, ensuring that we are working closely with community members to co-design the priorities of the program and to ensure it meets the needs of the wider community in each area that we deliver CDP.

    Training

ALPA is a Registered Training Organisation endorsed by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) offering nationally recognised qualifications, currently offering Certificate 1 to 4 from the Retail Services training package SIR, Certificate 1 & 2 from the Community Services training package CHC and Certificate 1 & 2 from the Foundation skills training package FSK.

    East Arnhem Youth Model

The East Arnhem Land Youth Model, also aptly named Guŋga’yunga Djamarrkuḻiny (Helping our Children), is a pilot research program that is facilitated by ALPA and is three way funded as a venture between ALPA, The Northern Territory Government and National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA).

Community members from Gapuwiyak, Galiwin’ku, Milingimbi and Ramingining are able to propose activities and projects for young people. These proposals are then assessed by local ‘Leadership Groups’. These groups of community leaders direct which projects and activities should be trialled in their communities to strengthen young people. The Leadership Groups manage a pool of funding to support the right activities, run in the right way aligning with a locally developed strategy. Through careful monitoring and evaluation of these activities, we work with the Leadership Groups to monitor what has and hasn\’t worked to strengthen youth, and how to adapt for next time.

    Babbarra Women’s Centre

Bábbarra Women’s Centre has a proud history of positive social impact.

From the early days, we have supported the lives of Aboriginal women in the community of Maningrida and on surrounding homelands.

Bábbarra Women’s Centre enables local women to develop and run women-centred enterprises that support healthy and sustainable livelihoods.

Bábbarra Designs is our main enterprise. We have a textile workshop specialising in the production of hand-printed fabric design using linocut block prints and screen prints. We are one of only a few Indigenous textile-producing art centres in Australia that design, print and sew product onsite, in community.

We are governed by women for women, led by the strong voices of our Bábbarra Women’s Board. In this space, we women are in charge. We operate an op shop and we support women artists on remote homeland outstations in the region.

We are part of Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation, which was set up by Maningrida community leaders in 1974 to support people to live on their homelands.

    Children’s Ground

We work with each child in every family in a community to realise their aspirations for the cultural, social and economic wellbeing of the next generation. Education and opportunity are at the very heart of our approach, which involves working with Traditional Custodians and Elders as they lead the way in implementing the Children’s Ground Platform.

The Children’s Ground Integrated Learning and Wellbeing platform tackles the social, structural and economic determinants and inequities that currently underpin the devastating life experiences of children living in communities of extreme economic poverty. We respond to the multi-level influences on children’s development and life from pre-birth to 25 years.

The service system is designed to create a safe environment for children and families. This is achieved by privileging and respecting the First Language of the individual well as their culture and identity. The culture and identity of a child is fundamental to their learning and wellbeing.
