Carers NT
Carers NT is A Not-for-profit organisation dedicated to improving the lives of carers in the Northern Territory.
Carers are people who provide unpaid care & support to family & friends living with disability, chronic or terminal illness, mental illness, drug or alcohol issues or someone who is frail and aged.
Carers NT is inclusive of all carers and the people they care for, no matter their age, background, ethnicity, religious beliefs or sexual orientation.
Our vision is to have a community in which carers are recognised and valued as a significant asset in which they have access to timely and appropriate services.
We do this by promoting awareness of carers with government funders and the broader community and by giving carers and the person they care for access to services like respite, counselling, music therapy, volunteer support, peer support, advice and information, education and advocacy.
The mental health team at Carers NT offers education and training resources and skills for carers to help them sustain their caring role. We do this by facilitating Accredited Mental Health, Suicide Prevention and Self-Destructive Behaviour workshops which enables carers to identify signs of an impending mental health issue or crisis and provides the tools to assist in increasing the carer’s awareness in mental health, suicide prevention and behavioural issues.
These services help carers build their own capacity and ease some of the pressure for them and their families.

Step Out Community Access Service
Step Out offers a range of programs to meet the needs of eligible service users across the age spectrum.
The service users of Step Out have a wide range of disabilities, and many of them are high-needs. Step Out’s client base must meet a certain criteria and is mainly referred by the Katherine office of the Department of Health’s Aged and Disability Program. Step Out support workers strive towards the independence of service users by assisting in tasks, as opposed to completing the tasks themselves. Step Out staff members do not wear uniforms and drive unmarked vehicles to further aid in the integration and acceptance of people with disabilities in the Katherine community.
Step Out delivers community access, group and individual programs, as well as managing a respite house. This latter currently has supported accommodation for two service users and two-week blocks of respite for two additional service users. Each of these services encompasses a life-skills component that focuses on service user’s empowerment and independence.
Community Access Program
A range of activities that assists with community access for people with disabilities. Programs may include art & craft, cooking, shopping, swimming and meals at restaurants.
